TPO: The Market Leader

Thermoplastic polyolefin is the most-installed commercial membrane in America, and the value story is easy to see: bright white reflectivity that cuts summer cooling loads, heat-welded seams stronger than the sheet itself, and competitive installed cost. For offices, retail, schools, and warehouses, TPO is usually the number to beat.

EPDM: The Proven Veteran

The black rubber membrane has more than half a century of field history. It stays flexible in deep cold, tolerates temperature swings gracefully, and its simple installation makes it economical on large, uncomplicated roofs. The classic black surface absorbs heat — a factor to weigh in cooling-dominated buildings — though white EPDM exists.

PVC: The Specialist

PVC costs more, and for certain buildings it's worth every dollar. Its standout trait is chemical and grease resistance — kitchen exhaust that slowly destroys other membranes doesn't faze it — which makes it the default over restaurants and food-service buildings. Like TPO, its seams are hot-air welded into a monolithic surface.

The Quick Rules of Thumb

  • Restaurant or grease exhaust on the roof? PVC, full stop.
  • Cooling-dominated building wanting reflectivity and value? TPO.
  • Large simple roof, budget-driven, extreme temperature swings? EPDM earns its keep.
  • All three live or die by installation quality — the installer matters more than the initials.
